“Virši” continues to develop their compressed natural gas infrastructure in Latvia

Continuing to develop the availability and infrastructure of CNG (compressed natural gas), the largest domestic fuel trader “Virši” has made investments of more that EUR 1 million , as well as “Virši” has opened the third CNG station in Latvia - in Babīte Municipality, and plans to open the fourth in Rēzekne at the end of the year.

Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on the deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure requires the Member States to ensure that by the end of 2025, the distance between CNG stations in the TEN-T Core networks is not more than 150 km. The network of “Virši” service stations has made a significant contribution to the development of CNG in Latvia, thus significantly expanding the availability of CNG in the territory of Latvia.

Jānis Vība, the Chief Executive Director of “Virši”, explains: “Over the last decade, the network of CNG filling stations in Europe, as well as the number of CNG-powered vehicles has been growing rapidly. Latvia is still at the beginning of CNG development; however, we see potential in this alternative fuel and we will continue to open new CNG filling stations throughout Latvia. It should be emphasised that the installation sites of CNG stations are largely selected in accordance with the availability of infrastructure and the potential of the application. In the future, we plan to distribute the stations in other places in Latvia, thus the use of CNG vehicles will become more convenient and accessible.”

Currently, the publicly available CNG stations are located in Jēkabpils, Babīte and Rīga, on Lubānas Street. At the end of the current year, another CNG station is planned to be opened. Through investment of more than EUR 1 million, the construction of a brand new “Virši” service station is planned in Rēzekne. It will be possible to purchase not only CNG, but also classic fuels and other services. All stations have one CNG pump unit, each equipped with two refuelling ‘guns’; one for cars and the other for trucks.
